Models and Talent FAQ
Question:
Where can I get information about being a model?
Answer: We recommend various books that we feel can be highly
beneficial for all models.
The Professional Model's Handbook
by Linda A. Balhorn, et al.
A Comprehensive Guide to Modeling and Related Fields
How
to Become a Successful Commercial Model
by Aaron R. Marcus.
The Complete Commercial Modeling Handbook
The
Fashion Book
by James Abbe, (1920s fashion photographer),
Zoran, (Designer). There are 500 entries in this massive
encyclopedia of fashion.
The
Wilhelmina Guide To Modeling
by Natasha Esch.
This is our top recommendation for new models.
Model
by Marie Anderson Boyd.
This book is a little newer and is also very helpful.
The
International Directory of Model & Talent Agencies
published
by Peter Glenn.
This book is another must for new models.
Skin
Deep
by Barbara Summers
Inside the World of Black Fashion Models
Runway
by Larry Fink (Photographer), Guy Trebay (Introduction).
This book is Larry Fink's hilariously gruesome portrait of the
fashion world.
When getting started in this
industry, it is best to educate yourself and not rely on the
advice of a single person. This is a "grown-up" business
so you'd better be street smart and business wise so as not to be
taken advantage of!
Question:
Several of my friends have gone to a local agency, but first had
to pay a lot of money to take modeling classes. Do I really have
to do this?
Answer: No...If you have
"what it takes" any reputable agency will take you on
regardless of whether or not you have taken any modeling classes.
A good agency will teach its models what they need to learn and
never charge them money. Schools may give a shy person some confidence,
but it will do nothing for helping that model get anywhere. A "certificate"
from a modeling school will NOT impress a large marketing agency
what-so-ever. It's not about your skills when you walk in the door--it's
about your "look".
Question:
I was at a local mall and an "agent" came up to me and
said he was interested in me. Should I respond?
Answer: Understand, models
are "found" everyday, everywhere. This agency has found
some great models right here in our local malls. Those same models
are now under contract around the world! There are also many scams
out there so you must be careful. A good agent would simply give
you a card and ask you to call that agency. Simply take the business
card, say thank-you, then do your homework. Check them out! While
it is likely a legitimate offer, it is still better to be safe than
sorry. Never, EVER give out your name and address to a stranger.
Question:
A really big modeling convention is coming to town, but it costs
so much money. Will I really get discovered?
Answer:
There are so many differing opinions on these modeling conventions.
I have personally taken part in them with models so understand first
- I know what I'm talking about here. When you go to a convention
your hopes are high and you think you will probably blow everyone
out of the water with your "look". You had better
prepare yourself!!
- Many of these larger modeling
conventions have turn-outs in the hundreds (600-800 models....).
You will be a small fish in a big sea.
- The competition is very tough.
Many have great portfolios already. Others have been modeling
for quite a while and are hoping to be signed by a larger agency.
- There will always be a few with
obvious potential that the agents will be drawn to. These are
usually the very marketable, very tall and thin people that
already look like they just jumped out of a magazine.
Be REALISTIC
with yourself BEFORE you go! If you're 5'6" and cute...you
probably won't be noticed. If your 5'9" + and a size 6 with
a good look, you probably will be noticed. Now there are always
exceptions - but rarely.
To pay such a high fee to attend these conventions and not be granted
the one-on-one attention of the modeling agent, just doesn't make
good sense to me. I would strongly suggest saving the money that
you would have spent on the convention to pay for a fantastic photo
shoot by a great photographer. You can then submit your outstanding
photos to the agencies you are interested in. Every one of the agencies
who attend these conventions have a mailing address that you can
submit your photos to for 32 cents...not hundreds of dollars.

Question:
Do you work woth only professional photographers?
Answer: No, we work with amateurs, semi-professional and professional
photographers. The criteria we use when we advise a model whether or
not to accept an assignment is: 1) Is the photographer paying a fair
price and is he likely to pay promptly; 2) Will the photographer
conduct himself in a professional manner; 3) Do his references and
book meet your expectations and 4) Is the assignment being offered
appropriate for the career goals of the model.
Question:
How do i get listed as a photographer on your web site??
Answer: We will list you here if you work with us. If you are
interested in working with us and you are located in South East
Florida, then e-mail
us with samples of your work and your references.
Question:
Why do dome models shoot nudes and others do not?
Answer: The decision to model nude is a personal choice each individual model
must make.
Question:
I have notices that you do not hace any nude images on you web site, yet
some of your models have been in Playboy(TM), why is that?
Answer: It is for each individual model to decide if they want to do nudity or
not. For those who choose to, the ones that publish a nude image
will usually get far more legitimate offers than the models that do
not. From the beginning we have battled with whether or not to
even allow membership to our team to those who have posed in published
nudes. We have recently decided that Playboy style nudes would
be the limit and have since and at this time, we have still chosen not
to display any of those nude images. This is not to say that we
will not make these nude images available to view in a private members
area some day in the future OR by some other means.
A quote from
the One Model Place Guidelines: "Nudity (Playboy Style
etc.) and artistic nudity are wonderful art forms - they have and
always will be very welcome on this site - they often show a model's
or photographer's range and interest and are often a deciding factor
in a photographer's decision to work with a model or not, and visa
versa. So it's fine to have nude images as part of a
portfolio."
Although we
have been slow to adopt this policy, we have come to agree, through
our experience that they are probably right. This in no way
suggests that we are encouraging our models to accept nude
assignments. That has always been a decision they need to make
on their own. Likewise, should they make such a decision, we
want to provide them with all the tools at their disposal to become
successful I the industry.
Question:
Cany I book your models for adult or pornographic assignments?
Answer: While there are many agents and managers in town that work in the
adult industry, we do not. With very few exceptions, those of our
models who work nude limit themselves to assignments that are commonly
defined as Playboy-Style. If you are interested in
shooting models for anything beyond Playboy-Style nudes click
here.
Question:
I have noticed that your web site id designed by Rock Brothers Productions,
who are they?
Answer: That is an interesting and fair question.
RBP
is a growing multi-media production company and a division
of Rock Brothers Enterprises, Inc. based in Pompano Beach, FL. RBP provides South Beach Models and Talent with internet services as well
as photography and video production. South Beach Models, Inc. was formed by the same owners
of RBP as separate corporate entity from RBP which
would provide model
management and talent scouting services.
Question:
How do I book a model?
Answer: We do not procure work the models and talent you see on this web
site. We are not talent agents nor a modeling agency.
However, you may make arrangements with the
individual models themselves or we will refer you inquiry as a value added
service to the
models for their affiliation with our web site. When you request information on an individual
model and/or talent from our web site, a copy of the request is forwarded automatically to
the individual. They will either respond themselves or ask us to do so
for them. Ultimately, you will be contacted directly by the model
and/or talent to
confirm the inquiry.
Question:
Some of your models look young, are they all over 18?

18. South Beach Models and Talent provide model management and career
